Hicksville Pet Wellness

Since our very first day, Island Trees Veterinary Hospital, has been a client-centered veterinary practice that believes in compassionate individualized care. Our mission is to treat every pet with the conscientious and thoughtful care we would want for our own pets. When you come to our facility you will be greeted by a staff of dedicated, long-time client care and medical professionals who bring a deep love for animals to their work.

It is our belief that the practice of preventative veterinary medicine is the key to a long and healthy life for your pet. This is why we advocate thorough wellness exams, vaccinations (to prevent common diseases), blood pressure and glaucoma screening (especially for older pets), laboratory testing, grooming, and routine dental care.

Despite the best preventative care, injuries and illness do occur. Throughout our years of practice, Island Trees Veterinary Hospital has remained at the leading edge of advancements in veterinary care. Our facility includes a modern, fully equipped surgical suite that allows us to offer a wide range of soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. Our diagnostic capabilities include full-body radiographs, ultrasound, endoscopy, rhinoscopy, and an in-house lab. We maintain collaborative relationships with a network of board-certified specialists within close proximity to our hospital should any of our patients require advanced care.

Patient care and comfort are our top priority. Please take a few moments to browse through our site and learn about our services. Feel free to call us and inquire about anything on our site or to book an appointment.

Your Pet’s Wellness Exam

The core of any preventative medical regimen is thorough and regular wellness exams, similar to annual physician’s appointments.

These nose-to-tail exams are the best means for your veterinarian to periodically assess your pet’s overall health and to detect subtle signs of underlying disease. These appointments are beneficial for pet owners too by providing an opportunity to voice any questions or concerns.

During your pet’s wellness exam, your veterinarian will:

Examine the pet’s respiratory system – By listening to your pet’s lungs with a stethoscope we are able to assess respiratory health and detect a range of health issues at an early stage. These include respiratory infections, obstructive diseases and other pulmonary issues.

Assess the pet’s heart – A stethoscope is also a great tool for assessing the health of your pet’s heart. Your veterinarian can listen for murmurs and other irregular heartbeat patterns.

Examine the mouth – The systemic health of your pet can be affected by poor dental health because infections can enter the bloodstream and infect other parts of the body. Dental disease is also one of the most common and preventable health issues in pets.

Assess vision and eyes – This does not involve an eye chart, but your veterinarian will check for issues related to vision and ocular health. Conditions such as glaucoma are relatively common in older pets and can be treated when discovered early.

Look in the ears – Infections, ear mites, and allergies are relatively common in companion animals. An otoscope is used to look deep into the ear canal to assess for damage or inflamation. Swabs may be taken and evaluated under microscope to determine the type of infection (bacteria, yeast, or parasite).

Palpate lymph nodes, abdomen and skin – By using the hands to touch and feel for abnormalities such as bumps, lesions or hair loss, your veterinarian can detect dermatological and systemic illnesses.

Palpate joints and muscles – Arthritis and other orthopedic conditions are relatively common and if diagnosed at a later stage can be quite painful and limit your pet’s activity. Early detection allows earlier treatment and thus less pain for your pet, which will hopefully lead to more active years.

Lab testing – Laboratory testing allows us to evaluate the function of internal organs, blood, and other systems. These tests are critical for uncovering underlying disease processes that otherwise would remain unnoticed until they cause serious symptoms in your pet.
