East Meadow: Overview

The hamlet of East Meadow is located in Nassau County, Long Island. East Meadow is part of Hempstead, New York, and it is an unincorporated area whose name derived from its meadow classification. Once a meadow east of the brook named Meadow Brook, it now lies east of the Meadow Brook Parkway. It is approximately 30 miles from Manhattan, with a population of 38,132 (based on the 2010 census report).

History

Long Island was settled in 1643 by colonists who crossed over from Connecticut. At that time East Meadow was part of 17,000 acres of meadow (flowers, brush, grass). The following events were part of East Meadow’s rich history:

  • Initial East Meadow Trade, 1658: Hempstead residents created a contract with William Jacocks and Edward Raynor “to drive the cows to the East Meadow” for watering and grazing. Cow herders received wampum, grain, and butter as payment.

  • Sheep Herding Expands: Hempstead Plains and East Meadow were both owned by Hempstead townspeople. As an area productive to pasturing both sheep and cattle, sheep herding became an important industry. In the late 1700s, there were about 1400 sheep.

  • British Military Arrive During The American Revolution: East Meadow was occupied by British military rule until the war ended in 1783. In fact, the army camped on what is today known as Mitchel Field; horses and other supplies were received from the East Meadow farmers.

  • East Meadow School District is Born: The very first school district was called “Bushy or Brushy Plains,” and the school, itself, was located at the corners of East Meadow avenue and Front Street.

  • Merchant Prince Purchases Great Hempstead Plains: A.T. Stewart (Merchant Prince), one of the wealthiest people in the country, purchased Great Hempstead Plains common lands in 1869. At $55/acre (7170 acres), the land included Floral Park to Bethpage ( a lot of present day East Meadow).

  • Eisenhower Park: The Nassau County Park was established in 1944 as the Nassau County Park at Salisbury. It was part of the Garden City Hotel’s golf club (the Salisbury Golf Club). When the owners couldn’t pay back taxes during the Depression, the county got the property. The Nassau County Park at Salisbury was official in 1949 and the park (larger than Central Park) became a memorial for our veterans.
